The first season of Franklin & Bash has recently finished being shown on E4 here in the UK. I stumbled across it by complete fluke as E4 were showing a preview trailer when I came back into a room, I caught maybe the last 2 seconds. In those 2 seconds I was immediately able to tell, I MUST watch this show!!
The show has a cast well known to anyone who grew up in the 90’s with Mark Paul Gosselaar (Saved By The Bell, Dead Man on Campus) as Peter Bash and Breckin Meyer (Road Trip, Rat Race) as Jared Franklin leading the show as two controversial trial attorneys trying to make a name for themselves in the big city. They are supported by their background team of ex convict Carmen, portrayed by the up and coming Dana Davies (Heroes, Bones) and the agoraphobic Pindar Singh (stand up comic Kumail Nanjiani) working from their luxury home/office known as The Cave.
It’s just another day in court for Franklin & Bash when they find themselves the subject of interest of the eccentric Stanton Infeld (Malcolm McDowell) who is a partner in the city’s largest law firm. After one of his leading lawyers is defeated by Franklin & Bash he decides they are exactly what his firm needs to shake things up a bit, much to the chagrin of their defeated opponent, the firms golden boy Damien Carp (Reed Diamond – 24, Dollhouse).
They immediately get to work making a name for themselves within the firm with their unique style of defending clients. Throughout the season we follow their progression through the ranks as they take on various unique cases assisting Infeld focus the firm on helping the “good guys” with excellent humour and drama. The comedy is fast paced; Gosselaar and Meyer steal the show with their quick wit, one liners and randomly inappropriate methods. Their on screen bond is excellent and they are easily believable as childhood best friends, which along with their interaction with the rest of the cast from judges, witnesses and colleagues make for hugely enjoyable watching.
The show has received fairly positive press worldwide, this has been noted mainly down to the looks and charm of Gosselaar and Meyer along with an excellent script. The show premiered in the US on June 1 2011 with an initial audience of roughly 3.5 million viewers. In the UK channel E4 launched the show on July 13th 2011 to an excellent reception and the second season is due for release next year.
The first season only consisted of 10 episodes at 45 minutes each and there is no word yet how the second will be structured. Due to it’s success in the UK Season One will be available to purchase on DVD Region 2 from the 14th November 2011 for £16.99 from Amazon. There is still no confirmed release date for any other regions.
Overall this show is easy to watch, fun and relaxing. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for something different. Quite simply, this is my show of the year for 2011.
